What is overweight

There are many ways that people have defined overweight and obesity in the past. Today there is good agreement on using ‘Body Mass Index’ (BMI) as a way correlate the relative sizes and risks of people.

BMI is calculated based on the following formula:

BMI = Wt (kg) or BMI = Wt (pounds) X 703
Ht (m)2 Ht (inches) 2

Weight Classification
Body Mass Index
Relative Risk
Underweight < 18.5
Normal Weight 18.5 - 24.9 Minimal
Overweight 25 - 29.9 Moderate
Obesity Type I 30 - 34.9 High
Obesity Type II 35 - 39.9 Very High
Obesity Type III (Morbid) >40 Extremely High

This information must be taken in context. People with a high muscle content or who are retaining a large amount of fluid (especially in disease conditions where these amounts can be extreme) may be put in the wrong classification. For this reason we also do body composition measurements.
