Body Mass Index (BMI):
The following calculator will determine your BMI.
;What is overweight
There are many ways that people have defined overweight and obesity in the past. Today there is good agreement on using ‘Body Mass Index’ (BMI) as a way correlate the relative sizes and risks of people.
BMI is calculated based on the following formula:
BMI = Wt (kg) or BMI = Wt (pounds) X 703
Ht (m)2 Ht (inches) 2
Weight Classification |
Body Mass Index |
Relative Risk |
| Underweight | < 18.5 | |
| Normal Weight | 18.5 - 24.9 | Minimal |
| Overweight | 25 - 29.9 | Moderate |
| Obesity Type I | 30 - 34.9 | High |
| Obesity Type II | 35 - 39.9 | Very High |
| Obesity Type III (Morbid) | >40 | Extremely High |
This information must be taken in context. People
with a high muscle content or who are retaining a large amount of
fluid (especially in disease conditions where these amounts can
be extreme) may be put in the wrong classification. For this reason
we also do body composition measurements.
